Setting boundaries with a new partner
Boundaries help new partners understand each other early. Here is how to set them clearly, kindly and without over-explaining.
Boundaries are simply what you are comfortable with. Naming them early helps both people feel safe, and it gives you a way to talk about things that matter to you without a crisis.
Be specific
Say what you like and don't like, rather than making a general statement. Specific boundaries are easier to respect, and easier to check in about.
Revisit them
Boundaries can change over time. Check in regularly, and be open about any change. A boundary is a point of information, not a fixed contract.
Respect the other person's
Listen to your partner's boundaries as carefully as you'd want yours heard. Respecting each other's limits is part of building trust.
