Medical-grade and food-grade: the labels, decoded
Medical-grade and food-grade appear on many toys, but the terms aren't a standard. Here is what they usually mean and how to check the claim.
Labels like medical-grade and food-grade sound reassuring, but they are marketing terms unless they are backed by a recognised standard.
What the terms suggest
Medical-grade usually suggests a material used in medical devices. Food-grade suggests a material approved for contact with food.
What to check
Look for a named material, such as platinum-cured silicone, and for a supplier that explains its testing. A label alone is not proof.
