Mindful touch: a short practice for two
Mindful touch is a simple practice for two people. Taking turns to touch and be touched can build trust and attention.
Mindful touch asks each person to focus on sensation without a goal. It is a gentle way to reconnect, and it can help people who feel rushed or distracted to slow down together.
The practice
Take turns touching each other's arms or back for five minutes each. The person being touched says what they notice, and the other person listens without responding with advice or judgement.
Changing roles
Switch roles and repeat the practice. Notice how it feels to give touch and to receive it, and whether either feels easier.
Afterwards
Talk about how it felt, and what you would like to try again. Many couples find this a useful way to talk about touch without pressure.
