Scent, colour and why some toys smell
Toys can carry strong scents from the material, the finish or the packaging. Here is why this happens, and how to tell whether a smell is a problem.
A new toy sometimes has a noticeable smell. This is often the material or packaging, and it usually fades with a wash and time to air.
Where smells come from
Plastics and some finishes give off a scent when new. Dyes can add colour and smell, and a toy kept in a sealed bag can hold on to odours.
When to be concerned
A smell that returns after cleaning, or that is sour or strong, can mean the material is porous or breaking down. In that case, stop using the toy.
